1. UNDERSTANDING ESSENTIAL OILS
So what is an essential oil exactly??
Essential oils are aromatic liquids distilled or extracted from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, and seeds. Most Young Living essential oils are extracted using steam distillation. Our food-grade stainless steel distillers are based on a state-of-the-art design that uses very low pressure and low temperature, which is critical for preserving all of the fragile therapeutic constituents of essential oils. Plants are steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using a special low-pressure, low-heat vertical steam technology. Our citrus oils are cold pressed from the rinds of their designated fruit, such as bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. No solvents or synthetic chemicals of any kind are used or added in either method.
Essential oils have also been used for thousands of years for cosmetic purposes, as well as for their spiritually and emotionally uplifting properties. Young Living has always been at the forefront of bringing this ancient tradition to modern users, introducing millions to a total mind/body wellness they may never have dreamed possible.

3. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CARRIER OILS

Carrier Oils are used to assist your essential oils. They can be used for dilution with kids, they are great to use with "hot" oils, and will also help your skin to absorb the oils at a faster rate.
Hot oils are oils like Peppermint, Oregano, Thyme, and Thieves to name a few. Think of it as you would hot sauce. When you take a bite it packs some heat. Same as a hot oil on your skin. It will pack some heat. Some people still prefer to use these oils neat (straight with out a carrier) but more sensitive skinned people and especially children should always have a carrier oil! It is up to you to decide how you prefer to use your essential oils. With a carrier oil or applied neat.
*Tip: If you choose to try your oil neat, and realize it's either too hot for you or to strong, just grab your carrier oil and begin applying to the site, to relieve the sensation!
*Tip: Do not use water to wash away an essential oil or if it gets in your eyes! Water and oils do not mix! The water will intensify the feeling! Always remember to grab your carrier oil!

4. USING YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS
Now on the fun part.... USING your Essential Oils!
There are 3 different ways to use Young Living Essential Oils! Topically, Aromatically, and Internally.

5. 18 Things to Know When You First Begin Using Young Living  Essential Oils…
YL DIST MUG

1. When it comes to using Young Living's oils, a little goes a long way. In most cases you only need 1-2 drops for each application. Use smaller amounts and frequent application for greater results. You should experience assistance quickly after application. If you don't notice any changes, try moving on to another oil.
2. If you ever need to dilute an essential oil because of sensitive skin, and you don’t have a carrier oil available, do not use water; use anything that contains ‘fat’… such as full fat yogurt, butter, full fat milk or cream. It’s the ‘fat’ that dilutes your essential oils.
3. If Frankincense was precious to Jesus, it should be precious to us too!
4. Essential oils that ‘may’ require a carrier oil for topical use: PanAway, Peppermint, Basil, any of the Eucalyptus, any of the citrus (Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerine, Bergamot*), Myrrh, Myrtle, and Melissa. Though most of those oils I use neat (undiluted).
5. Essential oils that should (almost) always be diluted with a carrier oil for topical use: Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Wintergreen, Oregano, Thyme, Lemongrass, Black Pepper, Patchouli, Mountain Savory, Nutmeg, Marjoram, Balsam Fir, Coriander, Cypress, Galbanum, Pine, Ravensara, Ocotea, Thieves. Again, I said “almost.”
6. “Neat” means undiluted
7. Diffusing essential oils (with a cold-air diffuser) alleviates stress, purifies the air, and creates a pleasant atmosphere in the home.
8. The Essential Rewards program is THE most cost effective way to earn points for free oils, and build your oils cabinet.
9. Young Living always has monthly promotions and you can earn free oils every month, which helps you grow your natural wellness toolbox.
10. Good “carrier oils” are: sweet almond oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.
11. Peace and Calming blend is the very best oil blend for little ones and big ones who need a little.... PEACE AND CALMING! ;) This oil also works very well for Momma's who could use a little of that in their life! ;)
12. How to afford essential oils – Balance your budget by transfer buying, give the gift of health, earn free products & get discount shipping, make your own Personal Care Products and Household cleaners, Refer a Friend – message us to learn more.
13. Mixing essential oils with sea salt or Epsom Salt prior to adding them to your bath water allows the essential oil to stay evenly dispersed in the water (instead of floating on top). My favorite bath recipe is 3 drops of Stress Away in a handful of epsom salts.
14. There are approximately 250-300 drops in a 15 ml bottle of essential oil.
15. Never get Essential Oils directly in your eyes. If you do, use olive oil on the bone around the eye to dissipate the oil. Flushing the eye with water will just spread the oil and not bring relief.  Similarly, essential oils should never be applied into the ear canal.
16. There are 2 main types of oils. Singles and Blends. Single oils contain one oil. Example: Lemon, Peppermint, Orange, Lavender. Blends contain more than one oil. Examples: Thieves, PanAway, Purification. As a rule of thumb when starting out, you can mix singles with singles, and singles with blends, but it is not advised to mix blends. While you will occasionally see people do this, and there will be no explosion if this is done, it can overwhelm the senses and create too much going on at one time. Again, just a helpful hint as you get begin.
17. Citrus Oils should always be used with glass! Whether you are using for internal purposes to flavor your water, or to assist in a cleaning product, or even in a roll on method. Only use glass containers! No plastics. Citrus oils digest the petrochemicals in the plastics and can eat away at them, leaking them into the container they are in. This is why many people choose to use Young Living citrus oils internally as a method of cleansing the petrochemicals from their body.
18. The feet are one of the safest and best places to apply essential oils, especially for babies and children. The pores are larger (for easier absorption) and the skin less sensitive. Although application to any part of the foot is good, you may find even greater results with incorporating vitaflex into your application. See the chart below to assess which parts of the foot are good to apply oil for certain uses (ie. I apply “sleepy” oils on the big toe, which is linked to the brain).
